The President's Page

I was born in The Banner County (County Clare) Southern Ireland and spent my childhood and teens there except for my final two years as a schoolboy when I boarded at Blackrock College in Dublin. The latter was one of the top rugby schools in Ireland and we invariably won the Senior and Junior rugby leagues.

Leaving school I went to Ross Commercial College in St Steven’s Green Dublin and having qualified in various commercial subjects was accepted by The Bank of Ireland as a new entrant but had to wait for a position within the Bank.

I was invited to visit my uncle and aunt in Midhurst and whilst there was offered a position with the Westminster Bank. I liked England and decided to accept their offer joining their branch in Pulborough West Sussex as a junior member of staff.

Over the next 40 years I spent a very enjoyable career moving from Branch to Branch in West Sussex and Kent. During this time I had a period as an Agricultural Manager, which entailed me travelling the length and breadth of England and Wales attending agricultural shows. I thoroughly enjoyed this as I had a farming background on my mother’s side and have always had a soft spot for the farming community. Throughout my banking career I was very lucky to have worked in the best possible towns and to end up living in Tenterden was the icing on the cake.

Sheila and I married in 1971 and we have three of the most fabulous daughters you can imagine; one in London and two in the States, Los Angeles and Chicago. We have one granddaughter who can do no wrong.

I was Secretary of Tenterden Lions club until recently but I am still an ordinary member. I, with Sheila, run the Tenterden Lions Supporters Club. I play social bridge and spend a lot of time gardening.

I thoroughly enjoy Probus and it was an honour to become President albeit sadly on the death of John Dixon. We have an excellent club which is very well supported by all and a first class committee a vital ingredient to any successful undertaking.
